FAQs

The nitty-gritty need-to-knows

ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPTS

What story lengths do you edit?

I will edit anything from short stories to full epics. See individual service pages for specific lengths per editing service.

Which genres do you edit?

My favourite genres to edit are fantasy and science fiction but I work with anything that falls under the speculative fiction umbrella. Other subgenres are welcome as long as the main genre is one of speculative fiction.

Will you edit the second (or third, etc) book in a series?

Of course! This usually requires that I read the previous books in the series so I have a full understanding of the story so far. I charge a small reading fee per book.

Is there any content you won’t edit?

I don’t have any restrictions about violence, sex, swearing or other adult themes appearing in a manuscript. However, I will not work on manuscripts that support or glorify discrimination.

Which file types are accepted?

You can send your manuscript as a .docx file or a PDF.

Please make sure you have enabled editing so I can leave comments in the manuscript.

What languages do you edit?

I edit in English only.

BOOKING AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT

What is the booking process?

  1. Fill out the Request a Quote form with some basic information about your book then upload your manuscript as a .docx or PDF file.

  2. Once received, I’ll edit the first 1,000 words of your story, create a quote and a contract for my services, and send them back to you. I’m happy to answer any questions you may have about your edit, quote or contract.

  3. When you’re ready to move forward, sign the contract and pay the deposit to secure your project start date. Here I’ll send a link to a questionnaire for more information about your book. You can fill this in at any time before editing begins.

  4. One week before the start date, I’ll email you with a reminder and a request for the latest version of the manuscript.

  5. All that’s left is for me to read your book and write up your editorial report! You get to relax or start a new project in the meantime. I’ll keep you appraised of progress throughout the editing process and return your manuscript by the allocated date. Note that payment needs to be finalised before the deliverables are sent.

How are documents shared?

I use bloom.io for project management. Once you’ve booked a service with me, you’ll receive a link to a project page that keeps all shared documents and contact information together. You can also message me any questions through the project page.

Do you do a second or third round of edits after revisions?

Yes. As word counts change after revisions, I create an invoice for each new version of your book. The rate is also lowered as I am already familiar with the material and the feedback required is usually less substantial.

After your revisions, you can contact me anytime to book the next round of feedback.

What about follow up emails?

All of my editing services include 2 rounds of email follow up. You can ask as many questions as you’d like and send them anytime during your revisions. Please note that further consultation can be purchased for an additional $20 per hour.
